Our Studies

Rawmana Fitness Pilot Study (PIC Health Pilot Study)
The goal of this project is to work with the Pacific Islander community in San Diego County to gather information that will inform culturally appropriate strategies to promote health. We do this by:

  • Having an advisory board of community leaders, members, and health professionals that will help guide and monitor the project.

Also, we had a fitness portion that promotes physical activity among NHPI individuals. They can bring a family or friend. This was a great study because the study provided a community for those who wanted to increase their physical activity.

The information gathered and partnerships built through PIC Health will lay the foundation for future approaches in community research that aim to decrease health disparities in the Pacific Islander community.

PIC Health North County

  • Gather information through surveys

Rawmana Fitness Multigenerational Pilot Study
The goal of this project is to work with the Pacific Islander community in San Diego County to gather information that will inform culturally appropriate strategies to promote health. We do this by:

  • Having an advisory board of community leaders, members, and health professionals that will help guide and monitor the project.

Also, we have a fitness and nutrition portion that promotes fitness and nutrition lessons to NHPI individuals. They can bring a family or friend who is 7 years old and older (65 years old). This is great because the study incorporates most ages and promotes community involvement.

The information gathered and partnerships built through PIC Health will lay the foundation for future approaches in community research that aim to decrease health disparities in the Pacific Islander community.

TheFitLab and PIC Health: Paddle Fitness Health Study
The goal of this project measures the fitness and health behaviors among outrigger canoe paddlers in San Diego.  This study would like to address why paddlers tend not to lose weight with the high volume of activity.

We aim to: (1) measure fitness of outrigger paddlers, (2) examine health behaviors (i.e., nutrition), and (3)  assess body composition (i.e., percent body fat). We will measure these through a 15-minute health survey, hydrostatic dunk tank measuring body fat percentage, 3-minute step test, and 500-meter ergometer test.
